“Round the Kitchen Table” is being hosted at Bethlem Gallery, at the site of Bethlem Royal Hospital

The Bethlem Gallery, at the heart of Bethlem Royal Hospital, is hosting a three week arts event.

The site of the worlds oldest psychiatric hospital has also hosted the Bethlem Gallery since the late nineties.

The event, titled “Round the Kitchen Table” is a contemporary arts festival, also inviting visitors to one-off public discussions, varying through the sort of topics you might find yourself having at the kitchen table.

The kitchen table theme has been contributed to from people throughout the Bethlem community, such as patients, staff and volunteers to create artwork inspired by the theme.

The idea came after curator Sam Curtis spent time at Bethlem Royal Hospital and realised what an important place the kitchen table was in people’s lives.

Speaking on the event and the kitchen tables importance, Mr Curtis said: “Clearly it’s a piece of furniture that holds real significance and has struck a chord with our contributors.

“The oak tree that provided that provided the timber for the table at the centre of the exhibition stood on the site well before the hospital arrived, so adds an extra element of history to the event.”

The event began yesterday (Wednesday) and runs until October 16.
