Woman, 78, fights for life after heart failure following Downham burglary

An elderly woman is fighting for her life after suffering suspected heart failure following a burglary in Downham.

Police were called to Hildenborough Gardens just after 10.45pm yesterday.

A 78-year-old woman was reportedly asleep in bed when two suspects entered her home and demanded she hand over her belongings.

She is believed to have fallen after a struggle. The suspects fled the address empty-handed.

The victim was initially treated at the scene by paramedics, but was later taken to a south London hospital in the early hours of this morning suffering from suspected heart failure.

She remains in a critical condition.

Det Ch Insp Barry Smith, of Lewisham Police, said: “This is currently being treated as a burglary and we are determined to catch the people responsible and bring them to justice.

“I am appealing to anyone who may have seen the suspects enter or run away from the address to come forward. In addition I would strongly urge anyone who may know the offenders to come forward and contact the police.”
