A rant by Adolf Hitler featured in the German film Downfall has been parodied countless times in recent years.
Finally the four minute, subtitled clip has been taken on by Jamie Ball, who runs a community Facebook page called Orpington Gossip.
Previously seen ranting about England’s lacklustre football performances or Taylor Swift’s latest chart topper, the Nazi leader has this time turned his attention on Orpington.
The film, released in 2004, shows the final days of Hitler’s life inside a military bunker. In Ball’s parody, he rages that “residents of Orpington are upset with the state of the High Street”.
After dismissing anyone from Petts Wood, Bickley or Chislehurst, Hitler goes on to launch a scathing attack on the state of Orpington - including rumours of the impending cinema development at The Walnuts Shopping Centre being put on hold.
However, Martin Price, manager of The Walnuts insists the plans for the Odeon cinema are still in full swing.
He said: “We are just waiting for the right pre-let agreement to come along, and then we can start construction.
“I can understand with the delay that people will start to talk, but everything is still in place.”
Creator Ball goes on to discuss the state of Orpington High Street, expressing dismay at Bromley Council’s widening of pavements and the lack of shops catering for men’s fashion.
Cllr Peter Morgan, executive for renewal and recreation, said: “It is worth remembering that the council spent money improving the High Street well before it spent anything on Bromley which is now having improvements made to the Northern part of the High Street.
“The important thing is that local people spend their money in Orpington as this will encourage new traders to open shops there.
“I am still very optimistic about the new cinemas and people need to remember that major developments such as this take time to put together - pre-letting of the units is a pre-requisite of funding and I know the developers are working very hard on this with every expectation of success.
“The other great advance for Orpington is the formation of the Orpington 1st BID (Business Improvement District) through which all local traders make a financial contribution towards the cost of maintaining and improving the town centre and its ongoing management.”
