The void was discovered on Tuesday afternoon

Thames Water engineers will be working over the weekend to fix a two-metre deep sinkhole which opened up this week.

Motorists driving through Chislehurst have faced delays since Tuesday afternoon, when the hole was discovered on the A222 Summer Hill.

The road was closed at the junction with Oakleigh Park Avenue following the discovery.

Those travelling from Bromley toward the town are being diverted via Bickley Park Road, through Petts Wood and along Orpington Road, with motorists heading towards Bromley are diverted towards Petts Wood to Bickley Park Road.

A spokesperson from Thames Water said: “We’re sorry for any disruption caused by our emergency repair work on Summer Hill.

“We’ve identified a piece of broken pipe, which we are in the process of fixing. We aim to have the road reopened as quickly as possible.”

During the closure, the 162 and 269 bus routes which run from Bexley into Bromley are on diversion, not serving Summer hill or Bromley Road.

Passengers have been asked to catch the bus from Bickley Park Road or Centre Common Road.
