The incident happened on Monday afternoon

A moped rider has been releaed from police custody following an accident at lunchtime on Monday.

Police were called at 1.44pm after an elderly pedestrian was struck down in Beckenham Road, opposite Clock House railway station.

London Ambulance service took the pedestrian, aged in his 70s, to a south London hospital, where he remains in a critical condition.

The 21-year-old moped rider stopped at the scene, and upon his arrest was taken to a south London police station.

He has been bailed until a date in early May, to return to a south London police station.

Detectives from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit based at Catford are investigating the incident.

Scotland Yard is now appealing for witnesses to come forward and assist with the investigation.
