THIEVES crashed a getaway car through a security barrier at an airfield after they were caught stealing metal.

Police were called to Biggin Hill Airport at 11.15am last Tuesday after reports of three men inside the airport boundary.

When the men were approached by security staff, the men made off in a white and blue tipper truck. As they were escaping, the truck crashed through a security barrier, less than 100 yards from the runway.

The truck then crashed through a hedge, collided with a Mercedes car and then sped off, towards Jail Lane.

The vehicle was tracked down by police officers and found the truck travelling along the A21.

All three men were arrested and metal was recovered.

Police say the metal was equipment that was needed for the

airport to operate, and if it wasn't recovered would have meant the closure of Biggin Hill.

Inspector Kevin Nutter, head of Bromley Police's Response Team 4, said: "This was an excellent piece of work. The officers used their local knowledge to head the suspects off and have prevented the closure of the airport potentially for days, as the item that was removed cannot be bought off the shelf and would need to be specially made."

Robert Simpson, 21, of Ronfearn Avenue, St Mary Cray, has been charged with theft, breaching an airport restricted zone, failing to stop at the scene of a road traffic collision and driving without due care and attention.

Joe Simpson, 19, of Mells Crescent, Mottingham, has been charged with theft and breaching an airport restricted zone.

Jack Haycraft, 22, of Lullingstone Avenue, Swanley, has been charged with theft and breaching an airport restricted zone.

Simpson and Haycraft are due to appear at Bromley Magistrates Court today, while Robert Simpson is due to appear next Tuesday. They are remanded in custody.
