The tendering process for the £6 million Chislehurst Road bridge is now underway following final design approval.

Contractors have been shortlisted and could start work on the re-build project in October.

Previously Bromley council said the bridge in Chislehurst Road/Orpington Road would be closed for up to 18 months but now it can only confirm it will be shut for a ‘significant’ length of time.

Safety inspections revealed severe structural weaknesses in the bridge and concluded that there was no alternative but to re-build the bridge.

Councillor for environment Colin Smith said: “It is very good news that the long term fully functioning future of this vital bridge has been assured. All the options have been explored but unfortunately, the bridge will be closed to traffic for a significant time period. We are doing everything possible to minimise the length of the closure period within the contract setting process”

The council said it would let residents know the build schedule when a contractor had been chosen. Motorists will face delays as traffic is diverted.
