A Sydenham “sexual predator” has been jailed for two years after he assaulted a 16-year-old boy who attended one of his football coaching sessions.
Marlon Barnes, 41, of Dartmouth Road, was sentenced at the Old Bailey last week and placed on the Sexual Offenders Register for 10 years.
The incident occurred at a football training session run by Barnes at the Alexandra Recreation Ground, in Penge, on March 30.
Having sustained a groin injury the boy remained behind after the session where Barnes sexually assaulted him on the pitch.
Barnes, previously banned from coaching in 2007, was arrested at his home on April 2 and charged five days later.
Det Con Ivan Rydqvist, of the Child Abuse Investigation Command, said: “Marlon Barnes is a sexual predator who deliberately set about targeting youngsters and engaging them in football training sessions with a view to sexually exploiting them.”
Police believe Barnes may have committed other, similar offences and are urging anyone who might have been a victim to report the incident.
The Child Abuse Investigation Team can be contacted on 020 7230 3242.
