Police were called to Cowden Road on Thursday

Police descended on an Orpington residential road on Thursday amid fears a suspicious item had been discovered.

Officers were called to Cowden Road at 9.47am, after an item had been dug up in the garden of one of the homes.

The discovery caused the whole road, just off Mayfield Avenue, to be evacuated, while specialist officers arrived at the scene to assess the mysterious object.

During the evacuation, residents waited in nearby Poverest Park, less than half a mile away.

A Met Police spokesperson confirmed the item “was not found to be suspicious” following an inspection.

Officers at the scene were stood down just before 11am and residents were allowed to return to their homes.
