A STUDENT claimed £12,000 in benefits while keeping secret the £20,000 she had saved in her bank account.

Sociology student Florence Ukueke, 43, of Kelsey Road, Orpington, claimed benefits from June 2004 until August 2008, Croydon Crown Court heard on Monday.

She pleaded guilty to making a false declaration and was ordered to carry out 100 hours unpaid work and to pay £50 costs.

Prosecutor Peter Ratliffe said she had since repaid everything she had been given.

The defence said she was anxious to improve her education.
