DRINKERS in Bromley could be facing a frightening time this Hallowe'en if they visit a haunted pub.

The Chequers Inn, Bickley, is said to be haunted by ghosts including a French policeman, a woman in stiletto heels and a poltergeist that forces visitors against walls. Highwayman Dick Turpin is said to have drank at the Southborough Lane pub regularly and could make quick getaways through tunnels from its cellars.

Danny Goldsborough, manager of the pub for five years, said: "When I first took over the pub I heard the footsteps of a female in high heels.

"I looked over my shoulder but there was nothing there - and nothing on the CCTV either. Little things are happening all the time. Things move. A lot of the activity is in the bathroom. Once I heard my two-year-old girl talking to 'a little boy' who didn't exist.

"Even a friend visited who had no idea about the ghosts. He was pinned to the floor upstairs and had to crawl out the room to stand up." But the 37-year-old said that ghost experts have suggested that the spirits are actually afraid of being barred by Mr Goldsborough.

He said: "Ghostsearch.co.uk actually said the ghosts seem to stop their activities around my presence because they are worried about being moved on."

The Chequers Inn is not the only place in Bromley thought to be a magnet for the supernatural.

The key Battle of Britain airfield, Biggin Hill, is allegedly haunted by a World War Two pilot who has been sighted in an RAF uniform, walking around the area.

Legend has it an unfortunate airman ditched his fighter in Tatsfield and the eerie drone of his aircraft's engine can be heard echoing across the hills.

A Navy or RAF officer has also been spotted walking near Bickley up Chatterton Road in Bromley.

Chislehurst Caves has a 'haunted pool' whose walls are said to be the last place an unfortunate woman saw before she was murdered there.
