VOLUNTEER police officers are to see their number more than triple in time for the 2012 Olympics.

London Mayor Boris Johnson launched a campaign to bring the number of Special Constables up to 10,000, costing £32 million of which a quarter will come from the government.

Unlike Police Community Support Officers, Special Constables have full police powers, dress as regular officers, and volunteer to work eight hours every fortnight.

Mr Johnson said: "I'd encourage all Londoners who have a hankering to do something different or want to help their local community to train as a Special."

Employers of Special Constables can receive financial cover to allow workers to take time out for police work.
