GoodGym encourages runners to run to a charity and give them a helping hand before running back

Bromley runners interested in keeping fit, and helping the community, are being invited to join the GoodGym runs.

The first Bromley GoodGym is meeting each Tuesday evening, with members being coached by a trainer as part of the run.

Each week the group runs to a local community organisation or charity to help with a practical task they would be unable to do alone. These tasks have already included clearing litter and removing weeds from the grounds of a youth centre and clearing up a local nature reserve.

As part of getting fit, GoodGym members are also invited to run to an older person to provide them with a befriending service.

This extra running motivation is designed to encourage runners to continue with their training. GoodGym members can also help older people with one off missions such as physical tasks around their home.

Simon Loughran, the Bromley GoodGym coach, who is also a UK Athletics coach said: “This is very much a social activity as well as a running session and we welcome runners of all ability. GoodGym is a growing community of runners who combine exercise with helping local communities and that’s what we are doing here in Bromley. Why not come and join us and sign up on the website.”

Stephen Carr, leader of Bromley Council said: “If you are interested in getting fitter and running, this might be for you.

“Our Borough is full of people who are inspired to support and help others, including Friends of Parks and foster carers for instance as two examples and I would like to pay tribute to people who gives their own time to serve others and the wider community.”

Runs currently start from Bromley Civic Centre each Tuesday evening at 6.30 p.m., with the run starting at 6.45 p.m.
