THE famous Chislehurst Caves are renowned for their ghouls and ghosts, but they are not the only place in the borough that will make your spine tingle.

THE famous Chislehurst Caves are renowned for their ghouls and ghosts, but they are not the only place in the borough that will make your spine tingle.

The Chequers pub, in Bromley Common, was frequented by none other than infamous highwayman Dick Turpin, the 18th century criminal who is still said to haunt the building.

Turpin terrorised Essex and east London as part of the Gregory Gang, and is said to have stayed at the watering hole as part of his legendary flight from London to York, where he was executed.

Certainly, former barmaid Sally Mills was in no doubt about the pub's paranormal activity when speaking to the Times in 1983.

"I was serving two chaps when the glasses just lifted off the bar," she said. "I told them it's all right it's only the spirit."

Alongside Turpin, the apparitions of two unidentified men and a woman have also been noted as well as a French policeman, known as Bernard.

Current landlords Danny and Sarah Cunningham recognise the pub's history as a haunted hotspot but admit they have not experienced anything untoward as the haunting season approaches.

Chislehurst Caves have long been seen as a centre of mystical activity, with a challenge set up in the '60s daring people to spend Halloween night alone in the caves.

This has since been scrapped, and exorcisms performed, but the influence of the Caves, separated into Roman, Druid and Anglo Saxon sections, has spread to nearby pub The Crown Inn

Barman Alex Marsh explained that the owners and staff were all new to the place, but they had heard a number of rumours, in particular to do with one of the upstairs toilets.

He added: "We have heard loose stories about some ghostly happenings, but I can't say I've heard anything concrete.
