POLICE have warned that a spate of distraction burglaries have been taking place throughout the borough. Con artists have posed as water board officials, police officers and even a pregnant woman needing the toilet to gain access to properties to steal from them.

Bromley Police are asking residents to be vigilant and if in doubt keep the door chain on or turn cold callers away. Genuine workers will generally carry ID, wear a uniform and drive a company vehicle. Legitimate callers will not mind waiting outside while you ring the number to check that their visit is genuine. Superintendent Matt Bell from Bromley Police said: "Cowardly and dishonest criminals deliberately ruin the lives of decent, honest and vulnerable people - people who have worked hard for what they have and who are the most undeserving victims.

"Pretending to be from a utility is the most common technique that these thieves use. If you see anything suspicious or if you have had a dubious caller at your door, please report it to the police immediately." For more information visit www.met.police.uk/crimeprevention.
