A MOTHER described the terrifying moment she received a call from her friend telling her that her 10-year-old daughter had been flashed by a pervert in a park.

The woman, who cannot be named to protect the identity of her child, said she was "disgusted" that anyone would put a youngster through that.

The girl had been playing with her 11-year-old friend in Shaftsbury Park last Tuesday at round 4.30pm.

A man on a bicycle rode towards them and beckoned them to come over which they ignored.

He exposed himself to the children and they ran off screaming.

The pervert then rode his mountain bike in the opposite direction while the girls kept running until they reached a shop near the exit of the park.

Disturbingly, the man had not been frightened off and had in fact cycled around and come out just yards from where the girls were waiting.

The youngster's mother said: "He started to ride up to the girls again and called for them to come over. The shopkeeper called to the man and he rode off.

"My daughter keeps asking me, was he looking for us?"

The mother of the 11-year-old girl was phoned by the shopkeeper who went and collected the distraught youngsters from the shop and called the police.

But the girls have been badly affected by the episode.

The concerned mother of the 10-year-old added: "The girls were really upset. My daughter is having nightmares and can't sleep. She is waking up sweating.

"What kind of person would do that to two little girls? It was broad daylight. It's totally disgusting. Now I don't want my kids to play out. We told the girls' school what happened to let other parents know that this sick person is out there."

A police spokesperson said: "Police received a report that two young girls were flashed at in Shaftesbury Park Recreation Ground on September 22.

"The two girls were in the park when a male approached them riding a pedal bike. He exposed himself to them as he passed and then turned around and exposed himself again." The police said they have stepped up patrols in the area. The man was white, aged in his mid- 20s and was wearing shiny tracksuit bottoms. He was described as "scruffy looking" and was riding a 'newish' bike. Anyone with information can contact police on 01689 891212 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
