Pickpockets are the focus of a new operation launched by Bromley Police in an attempt to prevent handbag and wallet thefts this summer.
The issue is a constant problem in Bromley’s town centre during this season, and shoppers are urged to keep their valuables out of sight by Det Ch Insp Andy Furphy.
He said: “Pickpockets and thieves go where people gather, where their attention can be distracted and where purses, wallets and phones are left on easy view.
“I would urge you to take simple crime prevention measures to keep your handbag, purse, money and bank cards safe.
“Please remember to keep your wallet or purse out of sight, avoid carrying large amounts of cash and be careful not to let anyone see what’s in your purse or wallet as you pay for goods.
“Make sure you never keep PIN numbers with bank cards and be vigilant and aware of who is around, particularly when withdrawing money from a cash machine.
“Put money immediately in a purse or wallet and secure it in a bag before moving away from the machine. Never leave your purse or bag unattended on a trolley, pushchair or wheelchair as it can be stolen in a matter of seconds”.
