A PAEDOPHILE who used a series of love letters to groom a 12-year-old girl for sex has been jailed for ten years.

Roger Field, 46, of Magpie Hall Lane, Bromley, molested the youth repeatedly at his home for nearly two years until she told a social worker.

Field, who worked for Argos, was convicted of child abuse last month at the Old Bailey.

His victim, now 17, was in court as he was sentenced.

Sentencing him last Thursday, Judge David Paget QC told him: "You have caused lasting and probably irreparable harm to her. That is the true seriousness of offences of this kind.

"Fortunately she seems to be a remarkably sensible young woman.

"I have no doubt she was genuinely fond of you and must now have mixed feelings about you. That is another consequence of your abuse."

Judge Paget said he was satisfied he did not have to pass an indeterminate sentence of imprisonment for public protection.

The Old Bailey heard the girl was 12 when she was first targeted by Field. She was repeatedly abused and finally persuaded to carry out sex acts upon him over a 20-month period between 2004 and 2006.

Field also wrote 'inappropriate' letters to his victim as if she was his girlfriend.

He has previous convictions for criminal damage, handling stolen goods, burglary and theft. Field was convicted of three charges of assault by penetration, five charges of sexual activity with a child and two charges of causing a child to engage in sexual

activity.
