New appointment announced in this week’s reshuffle

Orpington MPJo Johnson has been appointed Minister for Universities and Science.

Mr Johnson, who was returned to Parliament last Thursday with an increased majority of 19,979, replaces Tunbridge Wells MP Greg Clark in the role.

Mr Clark was put in charge of Communities and Local Government, formerly the domain of Eric Pickles.

Mr Johnson, a former Financial Times journalist and investment banker who was first elected to parliament in 2010, will report to business secretary Sajid Javid.

His previous government roles include assistant whip, parliamentary secretary at the cabinet office, and head of the Number 10 policy unit.

In the past, he has spoken out on the importance of allowing students to come to the UK
