Orpington epilepsy charity lands £500 bonus

Generous members of a historic social club have had their 
fundraising efforts doubled by a supermarket chain.

The South Crofton Social Club raised some £250 for the chosen charity, Orpington Epilepsy 
Support, at an event last Saturday organised by events chairman Brian Michell and attended by 120 members.

But Mr Michell was bowled over when Elliot Pilcher the manager of Sainsbury’s supermarket in Pallant Way, Locksbottom, offered to match every penny that the group raised.

Mr Michell said: “It was much more than I was expecting to raise. We were going to do this before Christmas but I had to cancel the event because of the snow.

“So this was a special combination of a festive and new year event — although some members grumbled about having to pay for the quiz for the first time ever!”

The society meets every month in St Paul’s Church, Crofton Road and dates back to 1929.
