An amateur golfer has bagged “a once in a lifetime opportunity” to take on the pros in South Africa after winning Volvo’s amateur tour.

Mark O’Shaughnessy, of Chelsfield, secured his place at the Volvo World Golf Challenge by seeing offa number of challenges and clinching the top spot in the car manufacturer’s Order of Merit.

He is one of six UK finalists to qualify from a pool of 70,000 amateur golfers and will now take on elite talent from the European Tour.

Although confident in his ability, the insurance company director says he his top spot finish was “totally unexpected.”

He added: “I watch golf tournaments whenever it’s on the television so to be able to play alongside the professionals is beyond my wildest dreams.

“It is a once in a lifetime opportunity and I will enjoy every minute.”

Mark is one 60 golfers battling on Thursday to make the cut at the renowned Zimbali golf course in order play one last time on Friday at the Durban Country Club.
