Olympic athlete and silver medallist Roger Black was the star guest at the opening of a school building.

The sportsman-turned TV presenter cut the ribbon of the Leek-Bailey drama and music department at independent Babington House School, Grange Drive, Chislehurst, on Tuesday afternoon.

To celebrate, the school organised an art workshop, storytelling and cookery demonstrations and a performance from the choir.

Speaking at the event, Mr Black said: “I’m delighted to be involved today and to have the opportunity to speak with the pupils here at Babington House School.

“This is our Olympic year, and it’s more important than ever that we inspire and encourage young people to take part in sport, and give them the confidence to develop their talent.

“I have really enjoyed meeting them and sharing with them the lessons I learnt in my sporting career, which resulted in me achieving my dream of standing on the Olympic rostrum in Atlanta in 1996.”

Head teacher Deborah Leek-Bailey, added: “The new building is a beautiful contemporary space, which will significantly enhance our schools provision of music, drama and information, computer and technology teaching, as well as dining and shower facilities.

“The Leek-Bailey building is as a result of years of planning.

“The project could not have been achieved without the help and support of governors, parents, staff and pupils, and we are thrilled that Roger Black has agreed to come and help us celebrate, in this our Olympic year.”

Mr Black won silver medals in the 400 metres sprint at both the Olympic Games and World Championships and two gold medals at the European Championships.
