AN ARMED robber has been jailed for nine years after committing a series of thefts in Dorset and Surrey.

Grant Findlay, 23, of Marvels Lane, Bromley, was sentenced at Woolwich Crown Court last Tuesday after pleading guilty to conspiracy to rob between April 1 and May 17 last year and possession of an imitation firearm with intent.

He was responsible for a series of robberies, with the help of accomplice Tony Turner, of no fixed address.

Turner, 29, sparked a manhunt when he escaped from a prison van while on his way to Barking Magistrates' Court charged with conspiracy-to-rob offences on April 2 last year.

He was arrested in May 2008, but Findlay remained at large. He was finally arrested on May 27 this year when he was stopped as a passenger in a car.

Bromley police officers thought they recognised him. Despite him giving false details they uncovered his identity and he was later charged with the robbery offences.

Detective Inspector Ian Corner, said: "Despite our best efforts, Findlay remained at large and wanted for these crimes even after his counterparts had been jailed for their part.

"Good work by Bromley police led to his identification when he was stopped. I'm extremely pleased he has now been brought to justice.
