A NEWSPAPER group has announced plans to close its two weekly free titles in Bromley and Bexley.

The Kent Messenger Group has entered into consultation after plans to earmark two free newspapers for closure, the Bromley Extra and the Bexley Extra, were announced.

Some 30 staff are said to be affected by the move, which is reported to have taken place so the group can focus on 'core, profitable areas'.

In a memo, Kent Messenger Group managing director Chris Bisco said: "Despite the excellent efforts of the very good team we have in those areas, we can see no prospect of growing revenues in a declining market to a level where profits can be made."

Since its launch in 2004, the Extra has seen fierce competition from Archant London's Bromley Times and the award-winning Bexley Times. A 30-day consultation period is to take place this month with staff and Mr Bisco said that efforts would be made to move most of them to other vacancies in the group. The group has also announced plans to stop distributing a third title in the series, the Sevenoaks Extra, but said it was not expecting any staff changes as a result.
