The bananas came in a Tesco delivery
The mother of a three-month-old child was left ‘terrified’ after discovering a bunch of bananas she had ordered from Tesco was covered in a spider’s nest.
Jenna Haistead, of Boswell House, Crown Lane, had ordered her weekly shop from Tesco and had already eaten two of the bananas, imported from the Dominican Republic, before she made the discovery.
She said: “I had two and then left them in the cupboard over night.
“The following morning I picked up the bag and noticed this spider’s nest all around the bananas.
“There were already 10 spiders dead around the bag, and then we found more live ones, they were only small but they can be quite dangerous from what I read afterwards.”
Ms Haistead was forced to throw away £30 worth of shopping and her partner take the day off work to deal with the spiders.
Tesco gave Ms Haistead a £50 voucher and sent someone to deal with the creepy crawlies, days after her initial complaint.
She said: “It’s not about the money, it’s the fact that my little girl’s health could have been in danger.
“It’s about the principal, no one at Tesco was apologetic. I just don’t want this to happen to anyone else.”
A Tesco spokesperson said, “We sell millions of bananas every week and our growers work hard to clean and inspect all the fruit carefully.
“However, given the freshness of our produce, this sort thing can happen on very rare occasions. We will update Ms Haistead on the findings of our investigation.”
