A MOTHER and her boyfriend murdered her 17-month-old son nine months after she was arrested for attacking the little boy, the Old Bailey heard on Tuesday.
The toddler was on the 'at risk' register but suffered eight fractured ribs and a broken back which had left him paralysed before he died.
His spine was broken when he was forced over the back of an adult's knee or banister rail, jurors heard.
The boy, born on 1 March 2006, already had a healing fracture to his leg and multiple bruises when his mother took him to the see a doctor when he was just eight months old.
She was arrested for assault with the boy's grandmother and the child went to stay with a family friend as investigations continued.
But a month later the boy was allowed back home.
When he died on August 3 last year, he had been on the Child Protection Register for nine months and the family had been monitored closely by Haringey social services.
Social workers found the family council flat in Haringey dirty, untidy and smelling of urine.
Three dogs including a large Rotweiller lived there with the mother, her boyfriend and four children.
The child's 27-year-old mother is accused of murder, along with her 32-year-old boyfriend, neither of whom can be named for legal reasons, and a third man Jason Owen, 36 of Wittersham Road, Bromley.
Prosecutor Sally O'Neill QC said: "Over the last seven or eight months of his short life, he was subjected to a course of assaults of increasing violence.
"The Crown's case against these defendants is that they themselves inflicted this unlawful force on the boy or that they participated in a joint enterprise."
The mother and boyfriend, both of Haringey and Owen deny murder.
The boyfriend and Owen also deny causing or allowing the death of a child.
The mother has admitted allowing the death of a child, but denies causing the death.
The trial continues.
