THE father of a woman accused of murdering her 17-month-old son told a court his daughter spent her days lazing on the sofa rather than caring for the toddler.
The youngster was looked after by the mum's 32-year-old boyfriend, who also did the cooking and cleaning, the Old Bailey heard last Thursday.
The tot died from a horrific catalogue of injuries including a broken back after some nine months of abuse and was on the 'at risk' register with Haringey Social Services.
The dad, from Leicester who cannot be named for legal reasons, had no contact with his daughter for much of her life until they were reunited three years ago, the Old Bailey heard.
To help build a bond, he came to stay with his 27-year-old daughter in their north London home several times.
Asked by prosecutor Sally O'Neill QC how his daughter would spend her days, the man said: "Sitting down."
Asked about cooking and cleaning, the father said: "She did the cooking, or her boyfriend did.
"He did the housework or I did. I didn't mind the housework, I told her I didn't mind."
The court was told the mum would discipline her son when necessary but he said the house was 'messy' and there were 'so many people' coming to visit.
The dad also met the family's three dogs, a German Shepherd, Rottweiler and Staffordshire Bull terrier.
The jury also heard from a family friend who was bitten by the boyfriend's Rottweiler twice during a visit to the house.
She was then warned not to report the incident by the boyfriend, especially to social services.
The court has heard the boy died after suffering a catalogue of injuries including nine broken ribs and a broken back that left him paralysed on August 3 last year.
It is claimed he was physically abused for months despite being placed on the Child Protection Register by Haringey Social Services in north London.
The mother and her 32-year-old lover, who both cannot be named for legal reasons, and lodger Jason Owen, 36, deny murdering the baby on August 3 last year.
The boyfriend, of Haringey, north London, and Owen, of Wittersham Road, Bromley, also deny causing or allowing the death of a child.
The mother, also of Haringey, has admitted allowing the death of a child, but denies causing the death.
The trial continues.
