A PILOT is feared dead after remains of his plane were found in the English Channel on Monday.

Rescuers searching for Jersey pilot Alex de Gruchy, 25, fear he has perished after his plane went missing from radar screens last Sunday night.

The solo pilot had set off from Biggin Hill Airport at just after 4.30pm in his American-made Cirrus SR22 but Jersey's air traffic control reported an inbound plane ditching 15 miles from Cherbourg an hour later.

French coast guards dispatched two helicopters and the Channel Island air search plane but they only found wreckage of the plane.

A Maritime and Coastguard Agency spokesman said: "We were informed by the French coastguard that wreckage was found on Monday morning at around 9.50am.

"There was heavy rain in the search area which was reducing visibility quite significantly.
