A man tried to abduct a nine-year-old girl in Sydenham yesterday, Scotland Yard said.

The attempted abduction happened at around 8.30am in Thorpewood Avenue when the girl was on her way to school.

Police said she was approached by a man who tried to get her into a nearby vehicle but failed.

The suspect is described as white, aged between 20 and 40, and of medium build. He was wearing a green padded coat, blue jeans and black cap.

The vehicle is described as a large blue vehicle with a large scratch on the bonnet.

DCI Greg Pople of Lewisham Police said: “We do not wish to cause alarm amongst parents but we would ask them and their children to remain vigilant.

“We would equally encourage anyone to alert police immediately by calling 999 if they are approached.”
