A man has been jailed for 10 months after an attempted robbery.

Claudio Andres Figueroa-Rios, 24, of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to attempted robbery and was sentenced at Croydon Crown Court on June 5.

On May 19 at 11.15am he grabbed the handbag of a woman as she was entering the HSBC bank in West Wickham High Street, attempting to run off with it.

A member of the public intervened, which caused Figueroa-Rios to let go of the woman’s bag, before chasing him and restraining him outside Swan Public House until the police arrived.

Figeroa-Rios is from Chile and had been living in England for a month.

He was staying at an address in Peckham after allowing his return plane ticket to lapse.
