CONSERVATIONISTS braved the cold weather to give the borough's very own plant a helping hand.

Keen environmentalists from charity BCTV cleared away brambles choking Bromley's namesake plant, broom, at Church House Gardens, in Church Road, Bromley, on Thursday.

The shrub is endangered in the borough but project officer Warren Young hopes the clearance will help its survival. He said: "There is only a small amount of broom left here so by clearing the brambles and cutting them back it will be able to breathe a bit more."

Broom is used to make brushes and thatching for roofs.

BCTV will be holding more community conservation projects in Bromley, including clearing away unwanted scrub, building footpaths and steps and general habitat management. The group meets at 10am every Thursday at Elmsfield Road, corner of Palace View beside Devonshire House.

Volunteers should wear suitable clothing and bring a packed lunch. BCTV provides tea, coffee and biscuits.

For more information, call Warren Young on 020 86929369 or 07740 899 614.
