A NINE-YEAR-OLD girl was taken to hospital after nearly drowning in a swimming pool.

The girl was rescued by lifeguards at West Wickham Leisure Centre after she failed to resurface while swimming in the pool in Station Road, West Wickham, at about 6pm last Saturday.

Staff performed CPR on the girl, who was taken by ambulance, conscious and breathing, to the Princess Royal University Hospital (PRUH) in Farnborough.

Head of communications at Bromley Mytime, which runs the pool, said: "Fortunately incidents like this are extremely rare and naturally we are all concerned about the welfare of the young person concerned.

"Our staff are trained to render immediate assistance and first aid which happened in this event. We will assist the Health and Safety Executive in their investigations and also review our own internal investigation into what happened."

Staff closed the pool for the rest of the evening, but it re-opend as usual the next morning.

A spokesperson for Bromley Council said: "The Council's Public Protection Team received a notification about an incident at a swimming pool. An investigation is now under way.
