A man wielding a large knife was tasered and arrested by police after threatening staff at Tesco, in Elmers End, this morning.

Police were called to the supermarket, in Croydon Road, at around 3.30am, and arrested a woman on suspicion of shoplifting - though the 35-year-old man had fled the scene in a car.

After hitting a number of parked cars during his escape from Tesco, the man then hit another parked car in Croydon Road before attempting to escape on foot.

He was later found on the roof of garages in Goddard Road with help from the police helicopter. Officers tasered him before recovering the knife.

He was arrested on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon, drink driving and absconding from prison.

No one was injured during the incident.
