Kent bowler Harry Podmore remains hopeful of beting Warwickshire at Edgbaston to claim the County Championship Division Two title.

The visitors closed day two on 38-1 in reply to Warwickshire’s first innings score of 380, with Podmore (3-67) and Joe Denly (3-48) the pick of the bowling.

But that leaves them 175 runs behind, having been dismissed for 167 first time around, and needing a victory to finish first and Podmore said: “Warwickshire are a very good side and their two openers showed what can happen if you apply yourself on a wicket like this. We’re still looking to win the game so we’ll come out and apply ourselves and see where that takes us.

“I enjoyed bowling on that pitch, there is something there if you bend your back. But I think we can say in the first innings, batting and bowling, that we weren’t up to our best.

“We didn’t hit the standards we have shown all season. That just shows what happens when you are not at your best against a good side.

“There is some turn and Joe and Adam bowled superbly and showed what can happen if you put the ball in the right areas. If we can get 200 or so ahead, it would be a tough ask for them on the last day.”

Both sides are already assured of promotion, level on 219 points at the top of the table with third-placed Sussex on 186 and having completed their season.
