The former Westmoreland Road resident was sentenced to 32 weeks in prison at Bexley Magistrates Court

A 24 year old woman was given two 16-week sentences last week regarding benefit fraud.

Aminata Meite, 24, formerly of Herron Court, Westmoreland Road, was the subject of an investigation by Bromley Council’s Internal Audit and Anti-Fraud team after information regarding rent arrears had been gathered.

It was found that Meite had submitted a forged Tenancy Agreement to Bromley’s Benefit Section and received nearly £9,000 between March 2013 and April 2015.

Meite explained to police through an interpreter that her partner had given her the forms to sign while he paid the rent.

No evidence was found to suggest this and efforts to trace her partner proved impossible.

She was charged with one count of making a false statement or representation to obtain benefit and one count of dishonestly producing a false Tenancy Agreement to obtain benefit.

On October 27 Meite was sentenced to 16 weeks imprisonment at Bexley Magistrates Court for each charge, totalling 32 weeks.

Councillor Neil Reddin chairman of Bromley’s audit committee said: “The sentence imposed in this case is welcomed and will send a clear message to other fraudsters that Bromley Council will find and prosecute them.

“Bromley Council does not tolerate any fraud and we will ensure that public funds are only meant for the needy of this borough.”
