WHOEVER said community spirit was dead obviously did not witness this giant street party held at the weekend.

Over 300 revellers enjoyed the Lunch with the Pope event in Pope Road, Bromley last Sunday, which was part of the national Big Lunch.

Drives and front gardens were decorated and given themes including sushi, French food and cakes while the street became a hive of activity with band Sour Daddy, pot your own sunflower stalls, beat the goalie games and hopscotch.

Pope Road organiser and resident Tony Mitchell, said: "It was magnificent. There were hundreds of people milling about. It was great to reclaim the road."

Thousands of street parties, including dozens in Bromley, were held across the country as part of the event, the brainchild of Cornwall's Eden Project founders Tim Smit and Paul Twivy . It thatexpected that up to two million people took part.

Mr Mitchell added: "It was wicked. Everyone was sharing everything.... It was all about friendship."
