A WARD at a hospital for the mentally ill has been praised for its high standard of patient care.

The Alex ground floor ward at Bethlem Royal Hospital, Beckenham, was given a top review describing it as "spectacular" and "exemplary".

The accolade came from Star Wards, a social justice project from campaigning charity Bright and works with mental health trusts to improve inpatients' daily experiences and treatment.

Bright Director, Marion Janner, said: "I'm fortunate to visit lots of great mental health wards. Alex ward is certainly one of these, thanks to the exceptional commitment, imagination and expertise of the ward manager, Amanda Pithouse. Alex ward is a female only 20 bed inpatient psychiatric ward for adults aged 18 to 65. The ward received praise for many reasons including major redecoration throughout and 'excellent' facilities in the art room, resources room and relaxation room.
