A couple of old cigarette cases gathering dust at home turned out to be more valuable than their owners thought.

The small cases were brought to an antiques valuation day in West Wickham were they were spotted by antiques expert Catherine Southon who is an expert on BBC’s Antique Road Trip.

More than 500 people queued to have their items valued by Ms Southon and fellow tv expert Mark Stacey.

But the items which really impressed the experts were brought in by two women.

Ms Southon, who valued the items, discovered that two of the pieces they brought were much more than a couple of old cigarette cases.

The first discovery, brought in by a woman who lives in Hayes, was a finely carved 19th century ivory Cantonese card case from China. The second piece is a Russian silver Cloisonne enamel cigarette case, dating from around 1890.

Both items are extremely rare, and are each valued at around £1,000.

Ms Southon said: “Every so often we find something a little bit special that makes our hearts race. Both ladies came in with a bag of things and they were lovely, however some were of little antique value. Buried at the bottom of the bags were these dusty old boxes which were brought along almost as an afterthought. I suddenly became very, very excited. What’s lovely is that both ladies had absolutely no idea what they had.”

The finds will go under the hammer at an auction on Thursday November 15.

Mark Stacey added: “We were completely surprised at the enormous turnout to our last valuation day at St Marks in West Wickham. People were queuing out of the hall and right up the road, in total we saw around 500 people, and saw some beautiful rare, and interesting antiques.”

The pair of antiques experts are holding another valuation day at St Mark’s Hall, Braemar Gardens in West Wickham on Friday June 29 between 10am and 3pm.
