MORE than two-thirds of carers in the borough look after their loved ones without the help of care organisations, research has revealed.

Carers Direct have found that more than 19,051 of the 28,308 carers in Bromley do not access any help or support from the NHS.

Approximately one-in-10 people in the area take care of elderly or disabled family members, but many do not see themselves as carers.

According to Carers Direct, 'hidden' carers spend 20 hours or more a week looking after loved ones without seeking assistance or support.

A helpline has been launched to encourage hidden carers to seek practical help, information and financial support.

Rob Finch from Carers Direct said: "Whether you look after someone for a few hours or several days a week, the helpline is there for you."

Call the helpline on 0808 802 0202 or go to www.nhs.uk/carersdirect.
