A GREAT American car will celebrate its birthday at the world's biggest one-day classic car show.

The Ford Capri will be on show with more than 3,000 other vehicles at the Bromley Pageant of Motoring, due to take place on June 14 at Norman Park, Bromley.

It is the 40th birthday of the classic vehicle, which first hit the British roads in 1968 as an alternative to the Mustang which had been a roaring success in the US.

Chairman of the Kent Capri and Ford Club, Paul Holland, said: "The Bromley Pageant will be fantastic, I am thoroughly looking forward to it.

"We are hoping to have as many models as we can, from the earliest to the last. The Capri is a classic car. Young lads still want to have one and women of a certain age still give a little smile when they walk past them because they remember being in the back of them. It was the first affordable sports car. They are still very popular today."

More than 27,000 people are expected to attend the pageant, which has been held in Bromley for more than 20 years.

Entertainment in the main arena will be hosted and compered by Jerry Thurston from Channel 4's Salvage Squad who will be working on a special vehicle restoration and Steve Colley will be performing motorcycle stunts.

Classic car owners will be able to get advice and tips from experts from magazine Classic Car Weekly.

Bromley Pageant director Jason Lunn said: "Last year was one of the best events we have ever held and this year looks set to be just as good.

"It is a great day for the whole family, there will be a local band called The Flames playing rock 'n' roll. We're hoping for good weather as always, last year I got sunburned and I don't mind if that happens again.

"This year is particularly big because it is 50 years of Mini so we are expecting them to be well represented.

"We also have a bigger autojumble stand which is lots of old, random car parts so anyone looking for that elusive bit might just find it there."
