Grassfires have devastated fields

Firefighters across the borough have been inundated with grass fires and fear further blazes as the hot dry weather continues.

Bromley Borough fire Commander Andrew Holcombe issued a stark warning after a 25 per cent increase in field fires compared to this time last year.

Last month was one of the driest, and hottest, Julys in the record books, keeping firefighters busier than ever.

Mr Holcombe said: “Grass can go up like a tinder box in these dry condition. This ‘smouldering summer’ will undoubtedly continue unless people take greater care with things like cigarettes and barbecues.”
