CHARITY golfers have raised £2,500 for Alzheimer sufferers.

Tony Prong, 69, of Longlands Park Crescent, Sidcup, organised the event at Orpington Golf Centre in Sandy Lane, Orpington, to raise money for The Alzheimer's Society, Bexley Branch.

Mr Prong cares full-time for his 62-year-old wife, Suzanne, who developed the disease five years ago.

The former sales manager said: "It's a devastating illness, the worst you could ever have. I do everything for my wife. I know what it's like to be a housewife now."

The money raised will go towards functions held by the society to help keep sufferers and their families active and in touch.

Mr Prong added: "I joined three years ago when I got in touch with the Alzheimer's Society, and they have been very, very good.

"We have a lot of clubs and events to go to, which is very important to Suzanne and myself. They are very supportive."

The golf centre supplied some prizes for a raffle which raised £320.

Prizes were awarded by the Mayor of Bexley, Nick O'Hare, who revealed that members of his own extended family suffer from the disease.

To donate to Mr Prong's branch directly, send cheques payable to The Alzheimer's Society Bexley Branch to Pier Road Centre, 42 Pier Road, Erith, DA8 1TA.
