Firefighters rescued nine people, including a baby and two children, from a stairwell fire at a block of flats in Sydenham Road, Sydenham last week.

Fire engines from Bromley and Forest Hill attended the incident after being called just after 9pm on Friday night. The fire was under control by 10.45pm.

Those rescued were all treated by the London Ambulance Service for smoke inhalation, and two adults and two children were taken to hospital.

Several of those rescued were on the phone to the brigade’s control team during the incident, who gave them fire survival guidance as they waited for rescue.

Six people escaped the blaze before the fire brigade arrived and were not thought be injured.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the London Fire Brigade and Metropolitan Police.
