THE RSPB is appealing for homeowners to create a wildlife restaurant in their gardens this winter.

Feed The Birds Day takes place next Saturday (October 24) and residents are encouraged to help the bird population during the colder months.

In harsh winters, birds like blackbirds, song thrushes, and even exotic waxwings - seasonal visitors from Scandinavia - come closer to our gardens in a search for food.

Top tips for attracting different species to your garden include planting native plants providing berries in winter such as hawthorn and ivy, making a log pile for insects and fungi, installing nesting boxes and creating a water feature.

The RSPB is holding over a hundred Feed The Birds Day events next weekend.

There will be family fun events all over the UK with activities such as bird cake making, nest box building, nature trails and face painting. More information will be available at www.rspb.org.uk/feedthebirds.
