Presenter and author Dr Miriam Stoppard opened the new maternity bereavement suite at Princess Royal University Hospital today.

Supported by charity Stillbirth and Neonatal Death (SANDs) the new suite aims to provide a calm and peaceful setting for families coping with a “special kind of grief”.

The room is designed to be a home from home, and features a double bed, television, fridge and leather sofa.

Dr Stoppard said: “Parents have the right to grieve and need to be able to be free to grieve in whatever way brings them comfort.

“It is a special kind of grief and it’s important to acknowledge this and to offer support and wraparound care. This room offers a place for them and helps them to recover.”

The maternity unit’s midwives are continuing to fundraise for the upkeep of the room, with Sarah White and Robyn Dalby set to bunjee jump from the 02 Arena on May 26.

Donations for the new suite can be made at justgiving.com/sandsroompruh, or visit facebook.com/sandsroomfunraising.
