Downham man charged with rape in Orpington church grounds

A Downham man has been charged with rape after allegedly attacking a woman in the grounds of an Orpington church yesterday.

James Isted, 26, of Crutchley Road, is also charged with assault on police and robbery, and was set to appeat at Bromley Magistrates Court this morning.

Police were called to the grounds of All Saints Church, in Church Hill, at around 1.30pm after receiving reports of a man assaulting a woman.

The suspect was chased from the scene and later arrested in a nearby road.

A woman in her 20s was taken to a local hospital for treatment to her injuries and has now been discharged. A police officer also required treatment to a deep wound in his hand.
