A DOCTOR accused of groping a seven-year-old girl during a check-up for hayfever was cleared on Wednesday, March 5.

GP Markandu Ragupathy, 57, of Den Close, Beckenham, was alleged to have pushed his hands inside the schoolgirl's underwear and grabbed her bottom.

However, the doctor denied sexual assault and claimed both the child and her mother were mistaken about the examination at the Torridon Road Surgery in Catford, on June 22 last year.

Jurors at Blackfriars Crown Court took just one hour and 36 minutes to find him not guilty of sexual assault.

They heard evidence both from the youngster and her mother, and were played a recording of the 999 call made by the distressed parent, who cannot be named, minutes after the incident.

The mother told the police operator at first she was "not 100 per cent sure" at what she had seen as her daughter was facing her.

But when she asked what had happened to the little girl, she said: "He put his hand inside my knickers and grabbed my bottom.
