The second week after the children return to school is known as the 'divorce week' as the pressure of the Christmas holidays and rising debts are blamed for the amount of divorce petitions received on that day.

But people in Bromley are encouraged to use mediation to find a solution to a failed relationship.

John Sirodcar, from the Legal Services Commission, said: "Typically, when a relationship breaks down, people head off to see a divorce solicitor and so begins a war of letters, ending maybe some months or even years later in an expensive court battle.

"Mediation is a much more constructive approach which saves a lot of financial and emotional cost. We have altered the way we pay legal aid to encourage solicitors to refer clients to mediation as the first step."

Fred Gibbons, Manager of South East London Family Mediation Bureau who provide Family Mediation in Bromley, said: "Mediation can be a calmer, quicker and cheaper way of separating, helping couples focus on a way forward in their separate lives, minimising conflict in the interest of their children and reducing costs."
