A CHINESE dance troupe launched their UK tour by celebrating the year of the tiger at a school.

RDFZ, a high school affiliated to Renmin University in Beijing, performed for students at the Longton Hall in Sydenham High School, near Crystal Palace, ahead of the Chinese New Year.

The performance last Sunday kicked off a UK tour during which the troupe are due to perform at other institutes, including Wellington College and Cambridge University.

The performances featured traditional Chinese dances inspired by folklore. Traditional English and Chinese songs were performed and martial arts demonstrations given.

Sydenham High School headteacher Kathryn Pullen was presented with a calligraphy scroll inscribed with the Chinese message, "Never tire of learning".

She said: "We are very honoured that RDFZ chose us as their first tour date in the UK. Some of us saw them perform two years ago in London and I knew seeing this performance would illuminate our students' learning about Chinese culture and history."

RDFZ was presented with a copy of the school's CD, Joyfully Sing, which was recorded by the Sydenham High choir during a recent tour of Venice.
