A COUNCILLOR has been expelled from the Conservative party after sending out 'racist' emails about prospective parliamentary candidates.
Orpington councillor Peter Hobbins was ejected from the party today (November 20) after he emailed fellow councillors and the Orpington Conservatives Association (OCA) complaining that there were no "'normal' English names" on the list of candidates.
In an email yesterday (November 19) to OCA chairman John Esler, he wrote: "I have been contacted by a Mr Dilon Gumraj and a Zerha Zaidi. Not one of them has a 'normal' English name.
"They want to be the PPC's (sic) for Orpington and asked me for my personal advice on how they would be the best candidates for Orpington Constituency. My view? For hells sake (sic). Why are the Candidates Department so keen on these foreign names?!!!
"The candidates department are simply rushing these names through. They have absolutely no idea about how Associations are organised and have ZERO experience of political campaigning. Their emails are PATHETIC.
"Maybe I should change my name to something foreign - how does Petrado Indiano Hobbinso sound to you?!"
His following email at 12.41am yesterday morning reads: "Here are just some of the questions some of these 'Approved Candidates list' (ers) who have emailed me about standing for Orpington in the last few days.
"How do I plan my speech? What do I do if I can't answer a question? Where is Orpington? I'm not sure how to approach this as I've not been involved in politics before...
"These questions firstly should not be directed to me and also if they want to be PPC's they should be all accounts be able to find the answers to these questions without any help (from me). I really do not want to read another cv about Africa!"
After the emails were leaked, the Conservatives swiftly suspended him from the party this afternoon.
A Conservatives spokesman said: "Councillor Hobbins has been immediately suspended from the Conservative Party and from the Conservative Group on Bromley council and he will play no part in the selection of the parliamentary candidate.
"There is no room for racism in the Conservative Party."
